The theme:
"We started discussing themes for the baby's room and chose safari for
a boy or garden for a girl," says Melissa. "And guess what? We had a
boy!"
The project:
"The most sentimental thing in the room is the mural, simply because it
was my hubby's idea from start to finish," Melissa says. "We could not
find any premade murals we liked and were shocked by the high prices
when we approached muralists for the job. Luckily, Jorge is a very
creative man. He did some searching on the Web and found a great safari
photo. There had to be some changes: Using Adobe Illustrator, he
removed all of the scary animals and added some giraffes and elephants.
But we were inspired by the scene overall. To get the image on the wall, he printed the new photo on transparency
paper, borrowed an overhead projector to superimpose the image onto the
wall, and traced it. Then he got to painting! It took about two
weekends from start to finish. He dedicated the mural to Mikey by
signing it 'Love, Dad.' Once the scene was complete we moved in all of the furniture, dressed
up the crib, added some stuffed animals, hung the hot air balloons and
voila! -- one awesome nursery designed by Dad."
The budget:
About $1,000, plus a healthy dose of creativity. "The high-ticket items
were the pieces of furniture, but we bought all of it at a baby store
that was having a moving sale and saved 50 percent," says Melissa.
