The theme:
"JR immediately ruled out pink," Erin says. "I was sad initially, but I
love the lavender and pale green we chose. It's a very calm and serene
room that Madeline can enjoy through her toddler years. Stripes were a
must, but it wasn't until I created several templates using Microsoft
Publisher that I knew exactly how I wanted them to look."
The project:
"I chose the height for the chair rail, and JR installed it," Erin
says. "We bought already-primed trim from a home-improvement store. JR
measured, then mitered the edges, and we painted them with an eggshell
spray enamel. He used a finishing gun to nail them to the wall, filled
the nail holes with white wood putty, touched up the paint, and caulked
the seams for a finished look."
"I painted everything below the rail white to prep for the stripes,"
Erin says. "Using a plumb line, an old metal ruler, and painter's tape,
I worked my way around the room drawing lines and taping out stripes.
My best tip: After putting the tape on the wall, rub it with an old
credit card so it will adhere to the wall and won't let the paint seep
underneath.
"These are plain wood letters that I painted two different colors of
blue -- the same blue in the bedding," says Erin. "Then I affixed them
to the wall with sheer blue ribbon. My very talented aunt painted two
pictures inspired by her favorite childhood book: The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies, by Cicely Mary Barker."
The budget:
Approximately $2,500, with the largest share of the cost going to furniture.
