Q: Implantation bleeding -- how many women actually experience this, and does it last a day, or two? -Mrs.Graves5*19*07 Mrs.Graves5*19*07 is not online. Last active: 11/27/2007 1:45:35 PM

A:
Having a bit of spotting? Light, brief (lasting just a day or two) spotting can actually be a sign of early pregnancy. It’s known as “implantation bleeding,” and here’s what it means: A few days after conception, that little fertilized (yay!) egg starts digging into the wall of your uterusand getting ready to grow. Since the uterine lining is nice and rich with blood, some folks spot a bit at this point. This is totally normal and no cause for concern. A pregnancy test and doctor's visit is in order, though, to make sure implantation bleeding is truly the culprit.

There aren't reliable stats on how many women actually experience implantation bleeding. Some do, some don't. And some claim it lasts for one day; others say three or four. All in all, there's no real way to know whether spotting (or lack thereof) indicates pregnancy. Only a test can tell.

If you find yourself bleeding heavily or for more than a couple of days, or if you bleed during a later stage of your pregnancy, call your doctor right away. This could be a sign of miscarriage or an ectopic (often called “tubal”) pregnancy.

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

Wow!  Talk about mother's intuition.  I had some brown spotting that started a couple of day ago and I was SURE I was pregnant.  (I have a 3 month old!!)  I knew it was too early for a home pregnancy test to determine yes or no, so I went to my doctor's office and had my blood drawn. POSITIVE! My husband and I are actually very excited...but, the spotting is still going on.  I'm worried, b/c I miscarried once before, and the brown spotting was present, then, too.  I know it could be implantation bleeding, and I'm praying that's all it is.  I have endometriosis and my OB recommended we not put having another baby off.  We didn't exactly expect it to be this soon, but we're very grateful I was able to get pregnant again, and we're very much looking forward to more children.  KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED FOR US!!!

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

I recently had some brown spotting for about 5 days that started 2 weeks before my period was due.  I am 4 days late now but my serum HCG was negative.  i have been seen by infertility doctors for 3 years now with no luck yet.  This symptom is a first though so I am sort of anxious to know if there's a chance I could be pregnant or ifthe brown spotting was my period coming early?

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

My hubby and I have been TTC for 6 months now and I spot 2 days before getting my preiod.  Usually the spotting means your period is on the way.  But each time it happens I keep hoping it's implantation bleeding, but never is.  :-(

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

How much is considered spotting?  I had a bit just mixed with the usual clear discharge off and on for a day during the three-or-so-day time-frame I call my ovulation period.  Does that count?  After six months of trying, I'm afraid to have any hope.

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

My hubby & I also have been having the implantation bleeding since Friday of last week. It has stopped today but I'm scared to take the Pregnancy test. I'm not too sure if it will say negative because it's too early to detect in some people. Is it to early or should I test?

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

We have been TTC for about a month. I was not suppose to get my period until next week, but started having bleeding on Monday. It was red blood w/ a little cramping the first day and then brown and very light the next few days. Could this be implantation bleeding?

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

Could you clarify this article as far as when implantation bleeding could be expected?  I've been rather confused as to whether it is a "few days" (which I thought is about 3)...I've been told a minimum of 4 days by a Dr. that posts on this site, and seen a week to 10 days after conception on other resources.  Please clarify!  Thanks a bunch.

re: Q: Implantation Bleeding?

I had implantation bleeding the last time I got pregnant and it happened about 4 days after conception. Mine only lasted 1 day with no cramping. It was very very lite brownish red spotting.

TO THE NEST BABY - One part of the initial question was not answered... how many women experience implantation bleeding/cramping?  Is it something that EVERY woman experiences?

re: Q: Implantation bleeding?

I started spotting today! i'm not suppose to get my period until next wednesday according to my pills. My breast have been sore for a couple of days as well. Could I be pg? Is the cramping of your period and cramping of being pg feel the same?

re: Q: Implantation bleeding?

I had light brown bleeding for about 3 days that started as bright red the first day only after I wiped. The bleeding came a week before my period was due and I thought it was a reaction to just getting off the pill and a sign that my period was coming earlier. According to fertilityfriend.com I hadn't even ovulated based on my BBT chart. I took 4 HPT's a week later and they all positive after only one month TTC!! So you never know.
