Q: Conceiving after birth control?

Posted Monday, September 10, 2007 6:16 PM

Q: How long will it take to get pregnant after I get off my birth control?

Dr. Joseph Hill: Ovulation could return as early as the next menstrual cycle after you stop taking birth control pills, although regular cycles (every 24 to 32 days) could be delayed for a few months. Once your ovulatory cycle does return, your chances of getting pregnant are about 20% per month. If regular cycles don’t return within six months after you stop taking birth control, talk with your doctor.

What about after an IUD?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

If I am getting my period 28-30 days since being off BCP, can I assume I am ovulating regularly?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I've been on Allesse for several years and actually don't get my period at all even during the "off" week of the pill. I just finished my last pack of the pill. Any idea on when I would get my first period?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

it's been 42 days since my last period.  that was two days after i stopped taking my bc. we've been ttc since then as well. i've taken a couple tests and they have come back negative.  i'm getting a little frusturated. what do i do? should i wait to see if  i get a period soon or what?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

RC31604 - sounds like you and I are in the same boat.  the first day of my last period was 7/3/07.  I've taken three tests and they are all negative.  I'm so confused.  I know they say it may take a while to get back on track - but I have never had any problems.  I've even started to feel "symptoms" which I think is my body's reaction to me wishing I was pregnant.  I feel things that I never have before and am just totally lost.  Glad I'm not the only one out there.  I just wish I'd get my period so I could have some sort of starting point.  UUUUGGGGHHHH!!!

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I'm on seasonale and have been on it for the last 2 years. Is it the same factors as those that have been on the conventional monthly pill? There have been a few times where I've missed some pills, but the confusion is having to wait until the 90 days from the inital period to find ou if I'm getting it again.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I was pregant 2 weeks after going off the pill. (I was on Orthro Tru Cyclen for 10 yrs)  I had no clue at first b/c I figured I would be late anyway and never had a 'real' period so I thought I was just having PMS.  I am still amazed I got pregnant that quickly.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I went off the pill in 12/06 and am still having weird cycles.  I went to the doctor and she thinks it is stress related (recent graduate) and that it may take up to 3 months for my body to get back to normal.  She also took blood and said I had a "slightly fixed" uterus...whatever that means!  I also have to go in for a transvaginal ultrasound next week...this all so new so I hope it isn't painful! Good luck to all of you!

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I have only taken one shot of Depo Provera and have had horrible side effects for the last three months (including having my period for the last two months) and my husband and I have decided to no longer take contraceptives.  How long should I expect to "get back to normal" and be able to conceive?  I am just worried about the long term side effects of the Depo shot.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I'm with you AppleRed07. I was on Seasonale as well. My doctor tells me that it can take about 3 months to really have a chance of conceiving just like regular BC pills. I stop taking BC at the end of June and last week should be my 3rd ovulation since being off the pill. I got my period right on schedule at the end of every month. Hopefully this time I will get pregnant. Cross you fingers everyone and good luck to eveyone.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I am glad and sad to hear that I am not the only one out there having troubles TTC.  I stopped taking Ortho 4 months ago and nothing yet.  I have even started taking prenatal vitamins since I heard that helps your chances by providing your body with those "essentials" that you don't get normally.  I am hoping next month brings better luck and  best of luck to all of you.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that is having these feelings.  I got off bcp the beginning of August and had a normal period at the end of last of August.  However, I am currently 5 days late for this period.  We are not currently trying but if it happens we will be greatful.  I feel hungry a lot and pee all the time.  I'm thinking of taking a test to find out for sure tonight.  I'll keep y'all posted.

I was on Ortho Tricyclen LO since May 2006, just came off of it 7/29/07  and my last period was 7/26. I have not gotten a period since and we are trying to conceive not sure when it will happen.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I have been told by several people that since I'm having TTC and have a pretty irregular pd, one good way to try to get pregnant is to get on the pill for a few months, like 3-5 and then get off and that should make me regular and I should get pregnant shortly after coming off BC. Does anyone think this holds high chances for me, or will I just be taking something to keep me from getting what I want now anyway?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I started taking ortho tri-cyclen lo in dec.2004. Last Nov I stopped taking them, and eventually decided a few months later to get back on the pill because I couldn't stand not knowing when my period was going to stop and end.. Then we decided in September that I was going to stop the pill, my period was a few days late and now it's been 9days and my period hasn't stopped.. We want to try to get pregnant, but if I'm always bleeding, it makes it difficult.. Is there something wrong with me??

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I am finding all of this very interesting. I was put on BC when I was 16 due to eratic and very long periods (10-15daysm min). BC helped regulate me and caused my periods to be about 4-5 days. I am now 24. My Dr. told me at a recent appointment that I might have trouble getting pregnant because of the problems I have with my period before. She told me the best time, that is, the time I am most likely to get pregnant is the first month I am off BC. She says that the 3 month rule is just a myth.

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

Talked to my husband last night and he wants to wait until the beginning of the year to TTC. He doesn't want us to waste the money we spent on it. I'm only taking it 4 weeks at a time instead of all at once. I'm getting anxious after I finish the last month's worth!

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

It's been 38 days since my last cycle when I finished BC.  We are TTC and I keep thinking that I am feeling PG signs.  I have taken a couple of tests and they are all negative.  It's so frustrating and I'm not very patient.  What do I do?  Is there anything other than just waiting to get my period?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I was on the patch for 3 year, tried seasonal for one 90 day cycle, hated it and switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen for 2 cycles before throwing out the pill all together to TTC. I had 3 fairly regular cycles 26-30 days and then I had one that  was 40 days (I was convinced I was PG...but no)!  My last cycle was 28 days and my skin has been  breaking out like crazy. Hopefully this means all the BC is out of my system and I'm going to be regular from now on. But that 40 day cycle is making it really difficult to figure out when my best days to concieve are.

Taking YAZ - how long does it take to get out of your body and get pg?

I am on YAZ 1 year and we are ready TTC.  If i quit by BC now, when is it safe to conceive?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I was pregnant two weeks after going off the pill and we weren't even trying! My doctor says that some people have a heightened fertility period for two weeks after going off the pill, but a majority of people have to go 3 months or so to resume normal fertility. I guess it was just meant to be in our case.

I have been on various BC for the last six years. I am now 24. I went off the Nuva-Ring in October and we have been TTC since then. I have been getting regular periods since the first month. Has anyone heard anything about getting PG after being on the Nuva-Ring?

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I was on BC for several years. I went off of it in Nov. I've been getting a normal period, but still nothing. I have started breaking out like crazy.I hope this means its out of my system. My doctor said that taking prenatals now is a good idea and in some cases can actually help with fertility. We are still trying TTC, but it's getting frustrating. Good Luck to every one!!

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I was on Yasmin for a year and went off of it in Sept. '07.  My husband and I are ttc and no luck yet.  My cycles have been 29 days (except for one month in Dec. it was 33 days and I thought I was PG...but I wasn't).  I hope it doesn't take too many more months. But good luck to the rest of you.  Anyone else go off of Yasmin and have any luck ttc? :)

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

i have been off bc for 4 months now after being on 3 diff. ones for the past 6 years. i've been getting my period every 33 days since being off bc and taking prenatal vitamins for a little over a month now. But since taking the prenatals I've had NO signs of my period ( cramping, bloating, etc.) Very unusual for me. Was hoping for the best and then had the slightest spotting today. How frustrating.

seems a couple of us have had the IUD, I had the mirena, and had it removed on march 7, been TTC since then.  tested negative again on the 28th of march, had my cycle then too.

if any of you have any ideas or answers to which are the best ways to TTC and how long it takes your body to restart after birth control.  leave me a comment on my blog with the response please. thank you.  or you can email me at wildespirit86@yahoo.com

re: Q: Conceiving After Birth Control?

I agree with many of you, I have been off the pill since december, I had like one regular period, twice in one month and then none, took million tests all negative, got period after 30-40 days, makes it impossible to try to follow a chart on conception, having breakouts, back pain and yes, I do think the vitamins make me sick.

Does anyone have any experience with TTC after being off the Evra patch? We've been TTC for about a month, AF paid a visit a few days after I went off the BC, which is what usually happens. I have been on Evra for 4+ years. Is it possible to get PG after being off BC just a few weeks?

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I was on the pill for seven years before getting off to TTC.  I have been off for about 3 1/2 months, but I have only had one period.  Tomorrow will be exactly 4 weeks since i was supposed to start my last peroid.  I have taken several pregnacy tests, but all came back negative.  The last test I took was about a week ago, so I plan to retest in the morning.  I'm guessing that I will also call my Dr.  tomorrow either way.  What do you think???

My husband and I are going to stop taking the pill at the end of the year in hopes to conceive early in the spring. Do you think that it will be adequate time in order to concieve by March or April?

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I had a pre-pregnancy appointment with my doctor yesterday.  She said that the average time to conceive for most couples after stopping BC is 3-6 months.   Not what I wanted to hear, since I wanted a spring baby, but you never know for sure.  That is just the average timeframe.  There are people who conceive just after stopping BC, and others that take longer.  She said just watch your period.  Once it starts getting more and more regular once you're off, then your chances are greater.  The first period after stopping could be closer to 30-35 days.  Take the prenatal vitamins and know your ovulation schedule. Have intercourse every other day...and Good Luck!

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

My husband and I decided to start TTC on June 21st I had a period that started on June 24th and ended on July 1st.  Now it has been 38 days since my last period started so I am 10 days late but I took a test on July 20th ( 1 day before missed period) and then again last Friday July 25th (4 days after missed period)  both were negative.  Did I just take the test too soon or could I be preggo?

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

How long did it take to regulate your cycle?  I am so used to being up to the minute on the pill.  This is my first month off of the pill so I know it is going to take some getting used to which is why I was asking.

Thanks!

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I wish ya'll all the best of luck.  I have been off the pill for 6 months now.  My period is still not regular and i'm still not sure i'm ovulating.  I have taken two prescriptions of provera after 50 or so days of my cycle.  I am now waiting to start taking prometrium next  saturday...which is supposed to help to regulate me.  It's hard to keep all of this off of my mind, but i'm trying to stay positive.  My dr. won't do "tests" until we have been trying for a year, so I guess for now we will keep praying and practicing!!!   I really wish all of you the best of luck.... BABY DUST TO ALL!!

I went off of the pill in October of 2007, and I am now coming up on that 1 year mark with no baby luck, and my last period being in February 2008. I have an appointment with the Dr tomorrow to start Clomid, to help my ovulation along, and with much hope, conceive. Good luck to all who are struggling with this. re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

Fanny, from what I understand, your body probably never got a chance to get used to being on bc, so you can probably just expect things to be like you never took them... were your periods normal before? if so then wait until you miss one to take a test. You can always call your gyno and ask what she thinks. Also, why at 19 are you having unprotected sex, did you skip health class or something??

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I was on birth control pills for 3 years when i stopped them a few months ago. I didnt get a period for 65 days, so I took hpt's all the time and I was sure that it was false negatives or an ectopic pregnany. Turns out the pill was just messing with my body because of all the hormones. I was fine the next month. During those 65 days my breasts were sore and swollen, I had to pee often, it was like pregnacy symptoms. Basically what i'm saying is that unfortunately, a period after bcp can take a long time and be very confusing for some people.

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I'm finding everyone's comments very helpful! I'm new to this site and to TTC. I was on birth control for 5 years and recently my husband and I made the decision to start trying to conceive. I went off my birth control at the end of June, with the understanding that it could take 2-3 months for my cycle to regulate, and before I could/would have any luck of conceiving. It has now been 3 months and one week since I have been off BC. I realize that in the scheme of things that is not all that long, but oh the anxiety! lol I seem to be gathering that TTC after getting off BC has a lot to do with how well your body seems to be regulating and how much your cycles are becoming regular. I have been taking my prenatal vitamins since the moment I went off BC, have made a preemptive appointment to discuss everything I can be doing to increase my chances and what I should avoid doing, and my periods for the past three months have been exactly 27 days long, start to start. It’s been hell having a normal period again, but like magic predicting it! I have been charting out the time I should be ‘ovulating’ and my husband and I are going at it every to every other day during that entire time, before and after.

All in all, I think we’re doing everything right, but I’m so paranoid that there is going to be something wrong with me (or him). My doctor said not to be and that there is only cause to worry if we have been trying for a year. Am I correct in thinking that this must be a positive sign since my cycles have been THAT incredibly regular? Have any of you been having extremely regular cycles after going off BC, but not having any luck?

This month I have been experiencing some very unusual middle pains. It isn’t like my usually cramping and it went from very intense lasting two days to very mild for the next few days. I have been extremely exhausted lately, increased urination, and my breasts have been somewhat tender… This doesn’t feel like my usual pre-period lingo, but I just don’t know! It’s not like I have been experiencing any of the very common signs like: spotting, darkening of areolas, nausea, or the obvious missed period yet! I should know by Monday morning whether we’ve had success, but in the mean time it would be nice to hear from others! Thanks in advance and good luck to all of those TTC!!

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I came off of BC in July.  Had a 28 day cycle in Aug.  In Sept was 4 days with with MAJOR cramps.  This month I am late again (33 days).  Pg tests are all neg.  I am so confused!

Any insight?

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

MuckDiva  I too came off BC at the end of July but I really don't think we can tell we are "late" yet because we haven't regulated our period. My Aug period was 38 days and then I just started today which was a 34 day cycle. So I can't really tell what my cycle will be and don't think you may be able to just yet. Me and my DH just decided to have sex every other day b/c I cant tell when I am ovulating and I don't really want to start charting just yet. My real worry is that I may not even be ovulating yet since I know it could take time after getting off BC.. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

hello ladies! I am also in everyones shoes! TTC!! I in the other hand have been off BC for two years my periods are regular. My DH and I decided to start TTC about four months ago (July) And I was not on any BC ( so you would figure it would not take me long right? WRONG) it has been three months and still nothing, I having been there having pg symtoms and nothing. Until this month I took the clomid, we did our homework this past weekend, and now we have to wait to see what happens! I pray that I did get pg on this first round I really don't like taking any medication. I have been taking my vitamins on a daily basis. So I wish everyone good luck and keep your hopes up high!!

Ok I'm 35 years old. I'm still on BCP.  I go for my annual in March 09.  I want to get of the BCPthan.  But I want a summer baby. Meaning that I don't want to get pregnant until August 2009.  Should I get off my BCP now or wait until I go to the doctor in March.

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

So I took my last pill on Monday and went on the prenatal vitamins this morning (it's Wednesday). What are some of the side-affects from going off Yaz? I have heard horror stories about weight gain, cramping, no periods for EVER, etc... ugh - any pointers? I just want to make sure that the transition from BCP to TTC isn't miserable... although the practicing sure is fun :-)

Thanks!!!

re: Q: Conceiving after birth control?

I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for 5 years and just went off on November 19th.  I found out yesterday that I was pregnant....less than 3 weeks later.  I was shocked becasue I'm 32 and have had health problems in the past.  Praise God!
