Q: Should I stop drinking before trying to conceive?  

A: Yes. According to the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, alcohol can affect your baby's development in the very first weeks -- even before you know you're pregnant. (But don't freak out if you find yourself pregnant and you haven't been a teetotaler -- chances are the baby will be fine if you stop drinking now.) The bottom line is there’s no known safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, so while it may be a fun way to get in the mood, it's best to stick to your favorite lovemaking tunes and some sexy under-things to light the fire. If you drink, you'll risk spending the next nine months worrying if those few sips hurt your baby. And believe us, you'll have much better things to think about!

Let me get this right - if I knowingly have a drink while TTC, then I am a bad bad woman, but if I dont' realize I'm pregnant and go on a bender, then it's okay because lots of women have drank not knowing they were pregnant?

American culture towards women drinking whilst pregnant is incredibly schizophrenic and assumes all women are alcoholics - made funnier because there are plenty of cultures and countries in which women who have limited amounts of alochol have perfectly healthy babies and aren't demonized.
