Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

Posted Tuesday, March 06, 2007 8:27 PM

I’m trying to conceive and have been monitoring my cycle carefully. I know when I ovulated and I made sure to have plenty of sex around that time. It’s been almost two weeks and I just took a urine test that says I’m not pregnant. Could it be a false negative?

A: Yes. Wait a couple days, hard as it is, and then try peeing on another stick. Most tests are quite accurate, and claim that they can be used even before you miss your period. The truth is, they may not work until the day your period is due, or even after. The tests are designed to detect the presence of hCG, a hormone the placenta releases after conception. But everyone’s levels vary, and your test might not be sensitive enough to detect the amount of hCG in your system. Or, you may have ovulated a few days later than you thought. You may even have had a faulty or expired test. To decrease the risk of a false negative, test first thing in the morning -- your urine will be more concentrated at this time since it's been collecting in your bladder all night long. If it's still negative, hang in there and try again in a few days -- this time, you may get the result you’re hoping for!

re: Q: Pregnancy Test False Negative?

Yeah... That's something that I read up on. Just because you ovulate alot during that time frame doesn't mean that you will absolutely get pregnant at that time. The egg(s) may not stick to the uterus, therefore not allowing the sperm to connect to it.

re: Q: Pregnancy Test False Negative?

I had a false negative too.  Like you, earlier in the month I had followed my ovulation tests to a tee, and I took a pregnancy test just one week after ovulation.  It was negative and I was crushed.  But, I took another one six days later and it was positive!  So, even though I was pregnant when I took that first test, it was too early to pick up on the hormone in my urine stream.  Don't lose hope!

re: Q: Pregnancy Test False Negative?

A false negative could also be a sign something else is wrong... I had a negative test, then two weeks later, a positive- tracking my conception date, my positive test was at about 5 weeks along-  but should have shown up on the previous test. It turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy- lower HGC levels are a sign of this! Check again, and get to the doc if you get a positive, just in case!

re: Q: Pregnancy Test False Negative?

I have been ttc for a little over a month now.  my cycle is usually 27 days with an IUD and since it has been out, 30 days.  My husband and i have tried while i was ovulating ( week before our trip) and we just got home from mexico and i haven't gotten my AF yet.  Its now day 32.  I have taken 3 pt and they are all negative.  Could it be that my cycle is working itself out due to travel? or I  tested too soon?  Should I keep testing til I get my AF?? AHHH!  I mean I  know its only been a month, but a girl can't help but get excited!!

re: Q: Pregnancy Test False Negative?

Hi, I'm having the same exact problems...I just took a test today and it was negative. My husband and just recently start TTC. This is the first month. I followed an ovulation calendar and I am very in tune with my body. I even have all these symtoms and am not sure how I got a false negative. I have been extremely tired not under stress, my breasts are tender, cramping but not like AF cramps, blue lines around my breasts and darker (nipples)...

The ovulation calendar said a test may work today. I am thinking it is a false negative...we are hoping so...I mean we followed the normal TTC things...like a lot of TTC when your supposed to be ovulating...prenatal vitamins, working out, eating healthy. I am going to wait it out. How soon should i test again??? My AF is supposed to arrive if not now very very soon.

re: Q: Pregnancy Test False Negative?

I am currently 11 days late.  I took test yesterday, negative.  Doc told me to take another on day 14, and call either way.  A co-worker of my mom's was pregnant and never got a positive HPT.  Doc confirmed it, and her baby is healthy as can be!  Hope this is the case for DH and me!!

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I havent had a period in a month and a half. I took my first pregnancy test today, with a negative  result. I have been having multiple pregnancy symptoms. I had a hard time taking the test, could I have had a false negative or am I just not pregnant? thanks

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I have read that for some women, hCG just doesn't show up well in urine, and so a pregnancy needs to be confirmed with a blood test by a doctor.  How true is this?

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

My husband and I decided to start TTC on June 21st I had a period that started on June 24th and ended on July 1st.  Now it has been 38 days since my last period started so I am 10 days late but I took a test on July 20th ( 1 day before missed period) and then again last Friday July 25th (4 days after missed period)  both were negative.  Did I just take the test too soon or could I be preggo?

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I'm in the same boat.  My husband and I are TTC as of July 22.  My period only lasted 3 days (super short for me as I have endometriosis), and I still haven't gotten my period as of now (9/6).  But, two tests both came up negative.  Any suggestions or advice?

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I am having the same situation as libbylu727....  Why does it need to be so confusing? I have all the symptoms as well, and I have been going to bed super early because I am so tired- my breasts have been tender the whole month, slight cramping happened twice, I get a hunger pain and need to eat something small so I don't feel funny. My period is not due till next week, and I took the test last night and it was negative... I am just guessing this is too early???

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I used HPT, took a urine test at the doctor's office and had a blood test, all were negative. That was within the last 7 days. I am now 15 days past due for my AF. Doctor says that maybe I just missed it since blood test was negative. Not under stress, sick or having weight issues. Didn't think you could just skip a period for no reason. Been TTC now for 9 months and have been late before but not like this. This was the first time it really seemed I was pregnant...but all tests were negative. Makes you start to loose hope.

I'm never late for my AF and now it's going in almost a week. I thought for sure TTC paid off, but after 2 tests of saying not posotive I don't know what to think! Already freaking a little that somethings wrong!

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

We have been ttc for 3 months now.I have been temping and took an ovulation kit last month, it said I "od" on day 15. My cycles have been 30days. I had slight bleeding on day 18 & 19.I was sopost to to get AF on 9/25 and I didnt (day 32 now).I tested on 9/26 2x and its was negative.I feel like crap, but dont want to spend a million a tests! Should I assume the slight bleeding was AF?

Pregnancy test false negative?, Four times?

JessBen, the same thing happened to me. My husband and I have been trying for a year and my period was supposed to come on the 17th or 18th and I have browning and light pink spotting on 18th, 19th and a drop on the 20th and nothing else. I ovulated on the 10th I think, becasue the mucus was very thick like egg whites. I tested on Friday and it was negative. I think I am going to go for a blood test. I would not assume it was a period.

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I am only 3 days late, but I have a consistent 30 day cycle.  I took a HPT this morning, but it was negative.  My DH and I have been TTC for 4 months, and were really hoping we were preggers!

For those of you who used Clear Blue Pregnancy tests... how accurate are these- have many of you had false positives with Clear Blue?

re: Q: Pregnancy test false negative?

I'm 8 days late with AF, and I took a PT on day 7 and got a BFN.  Did I test too soon?  I feel like I have subtle symptoms, but never being pregnant before I can't be to sure.  When is the optimal time to take a HPT?
