Q: First appointment timing?

Posted Tuesday, October 30, 2007 10:17 PM

Q: I called yesterday to schedule my first doc visit. They didn't schedule me until the middle of my 9th week. Is that okay? --carriem428

Dr. Ashley Roman: We typically schedule low risk patients for their first visit at around eight or nine weeks. There are some cases when we recommend women come to the office earlier (when they have a positive pregnancy test), such as if a woman has had recurrent early pregnancy losses or if she needs to be on blood thinners for a known blood clotting disorder.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

Wow! I was just about to make a post like yours today, because the same thing happened to me. I just found out I am about four weeks along. My doctor did not schedule me for an appt. until my 8th week as well, so it is a huge relief that someone else was in the same situation. Thanks for sharing.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

Weird that some doctors are different - mine's policy for low-risk 1st prenatal appts are to come in at 6 weeks, but since I have a history of miscarriage, they have me come in as soon as possible after a positive pregnancy test to check my hormones and do an ultrasound. It just drives you crazy not knowing what's going on inside your own body, doesn't it?!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

Well, I guess I am lucky. I am about 4 weeks and my doctor sheduled me for an appointment at 6 weeks. I wish I could go now!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I have a history of m/c as well. With my last pregnancy, I was scheduled by (a military) doctor to have my first appt at 10 weeks. I misscarried in my mid ninth week. Frustrating.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

My OB won't see me until 8 weeks as well.  I'm in my 5th week now and it's absolute agony waiting until that appointment!  I thought the 1st trimester was supposed to be super important to the baby's development.  If nothing else, an earlier appointment would at the very least make us moms feel better..

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I don't have my first appoinment until my 13th week.  I'm 8 weeks right now and I though it was a little long to wait but that's the date they gave me.  I didn't know it was unusual...

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I called today to schedule an appointment and she put me in for tomorrow. I am super excited. We have been trying for 8 months now. I am 54 days late and took a test a week ago and it was negative. I took one last night and it was positive.  YEAH!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

My first appt. is going to be at 8 weeks.  Although, since I had an early m/c in the past, the dr's office has done a series of beta's and two u/s already and I'm only 6 weeks.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I saw my family doctor who confirmed I was pregnant at 5 weeks but I won't be seeing my OB until the middle of my 9th week. I wish it were sooner, but I guess they know best.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

so good to hear everyone saying this. I am scheduled for my 8th week as well and I was starting to freak out! Of course I am also totally supersititous so I don't want to tell anyone until I have that Dr. Visit so I am in absolute agony waiting!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I called as soon as I found out (a day before my missed pd. showed up +!) and they won't see me until 6-8 weeks. I'm going at a litte over 7 weeks. It's killing me too!  Best wishes to everyone!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I called the doctor and they scheduled me for the next monday, I was only four weeks along... but my next appointment is not until I am 12 weeks... This seems like a long time, especially since I did not even see the doctor at the first appt, I just saw a nurse...

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

For those whose Dr.'s took them immediately after a positive test (like Sarah3716), what did your appointment consist of?  Mine is today, I know it's with a nurse but other than that I have no idea what to expect!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I'm high risk because of a blood clotting disorder and they are seeing me in the middle of my sixth week. They told me to continue taking my baby aspirin for now.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I have the same thing happening to me.  I am 6 weeks and they didn't schedule me till 9 1/2 weeks.  I'm freaking out wondering if everything is ok and I've been so tired and weak I'm hoping it's not my blood sugar or low iron!  But I won't know anything until a few more weeks.  So frustrating.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I just found out yesterday that I am not only pregnant but I'm about 7 1/2 weeks! After several negative home tests and a negative test at the free clinic (just this month)...we were starting to worry. My first appt. isn't until the end of the month which will put me at about 11 weeks.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I've been going to the same doctor for about 10 years, so I'm not sure if that makes any difference.  He saw me as soon as I called on New Years Eve!  I was 5 weeks and I go back at 7 weeks.  At the first appointment they did an pelvic exam, pregnancy test, test for some stds (apparently standard procedure) and we had a long talk about what I should expect and the dos and do nots.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I found out earlier this week that I am pregnant.  Tomorrow will be 4 weeks.  My doctor also wanted to schedule my appointment at 7-8 weeks, but once I reminded her that I had an ecopic in my early 20's, they scheduled my appointment for my 5th week.  I am so excited...but I have never had time drag like this in my life.  I just want to make sure that this isn't another ectopic...and the waiting is driving me crazy.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I'm so glad I read this thread last night or I would have been really concerned when I called the Dr. this morning and they scheduled me for a month from now. Thanks for sharing!!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I called and my doctor schedule me without even asking me how far I thought I was. I'll be 5 weeks when I go. I'm assuming, like most of you who are getting right in to your docs, it will just be the basic exam, and test. We'll see!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I am going at 9 weeks.  It feels like an ETERNITY!!!  I called the day after I found out I was pregnant.

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I will be 11 weeks by the time I get in to the doctor at the end of this month, but my doc said that they want to see you between 8-12 weeks.  I started taking prenatals as soon as I found out I was pregnant.  It is making me nervous to wait that long though, because I worry that I may be "more pregnant" than I think I am!!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I just found out I'm pregnant today and I'm scheduled for an appointment on the 26th (I'll be 6 weeks).

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

Don't be afraid to call your Dr. back and reschedule for earlier. I'm a first-timer and was really nervous and excited about my pregnancy but my Dr. scheduled me for 7 weeks. I just had too many questions and it seemed like an eternity so I called back and bumped it up to my fifth week. A lot of my questions got answered and I felt a little relieved. My real testing is in another 3 weeks but at least I've already seen my Dr!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

Same here. I found out last Thursday(Valentine's Day) that I am pregnant. I called Friday and my appt. is when I am 8 weeks pregnant. My ob-gyn said that they wait 8 weeks so they can do a vaginal ultrasound. I guess we can all wait in agony together!!! Has anyone else taken 5 pregnancy tests to confirm like I have. We have been trying since May so I am still shocked!!!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I've taken 3!  We will probably be due around the same time, when did you find out?

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I've also taken several tests since the first positive one!  My OB  schedules the first appt. at 8-10 wks.  unless you have a history of miscarriages or complicated pregnancies.  I am dying...I go on Tuesday, thank God!

re: Q: First Appointment Timing?

I took 3 HPT (ya i couldn't believe it) over this past weekend and all positive!! Called my Dr. on monday to make an aptt. and the nurse set it up for April 17th!! It feels so far away!!

re: Q: First appointment timing?

I am only 2 weeks (I found out I was pregnant from a blood test that I was required to take before I had an MRI) and my dr scheduled me to come in the next day. I don't understand why some doctors want to wait 8 weeks. My dr started me on pre natal vitamins and gave me a blood test to make sure all of my hormone levels were normal. I do not think I could have waited 8 weeks!  I am sure that if you asked to come in early, they would accomodate.

re: Q: First appointment timing?

I am 4 weeks and my first appointment isn't until 10 weeks, although they have me scheduled for an ultrasound at 8 weeks.  Seems so long to wait!

re: Q: First appointment timing?

I live in CA and have Kaiser as my health care provider -- i was assumign that since they are an HMO and tryo to keep costs down, they wouldnt see me until 11 weeks or something!  But I was pleasantly surprised when my OB/GYN recommended that I come in around 6 1/2 to 7 weeks ... but the best date for me turned out to be a couple days shy of 8 weeks.  She actually said that they would do an u/s to look for the baby's heartbeat -- is the baby developed enough at that stage to hear??

re: Q: First appointment timing?

I am so glad that I checked this right before I called.  I took 3 HPT's yesturday and called this morning.  They scheduled me for 4 weeks from now which will put me between 6-7 weeks.

re: Q: First appointment timing?

Tell me about the agony of waiting.  I'm more of a high risk as I had an ectopic pregnancy in March.  The OB said to make an appointment with her as soon as I found out that I was pregnant.  I called last Tuesday and didn't get one until Friday.  I guess that only makes me 5 weeks, but it's so hard not knowing.  Can't be excited until we know that everything is OK.
