Q: Alcohol and Breastfeeding?

Posted Sunday, January 20, 2008 5:16 PM

Q: Is it okay to drink alcohol while I'm breastfeeding? I've heard different points of view on this.

A: Well, you've heard different things because there are a few different opinions on this one. The American Academy of Pediatrics says alcohol in moderation (one or two drinks a week) is fine, while the March of Dimes recommends against drinking any alcohol -- they say it can restrict the flow of milk and delay baby's developmental milestones. If you do decide to drink, it's best to breastfeed before drinking alcohol, and then wait a few hours before nursing again. The old "pump and dump" -- throwing out the first batch of milk pumped after you drink alcohol -- really isn't necessary.

I really like to refer to kellymom.com for breastfeeding help - it's such a great resource!

My doula said that as long as you are able to drive you are able to nurse.  that's a good ratio to compare to.

re: Q: Alcohol and Breastfeeding?

I think an occasional glass of wine or beer  is fine. Know your limits, remember you have a child to still care for as well as feed. Time your feedins with your drinks, have your beer or wine after a feeding but only one glass, by the time baby gets hunger again two or more hours have already gone by!

re: Q: Alcohol and Breastfeeding?

The lactation consultants at my hospital said if you can feel the effects of the drink(s), you shouldn't nurse. If it's not enough to give you a buzz, you're fine. I'm not sure where they got that, but they repeated it a lot of times.
