Q: Packing a diaper bag?

Posted Tuesday, March 13, 2007 10:55 PM

Q: I'm planning a day out with my baby. What exactly should go in my diaper bag?

A: You’ll soon find a formula that works for you, but until then, here’s a guide for packing the diaper bag. Adjust according to season, the length of your trip (around the block or around the world?), and baby’s age and special needs.

Diapers (one for every two hours and a few extra)

Diaper wipes in a zipper bag (these also work as hand wipes for mommy)

Changing pad

Diaper cream

Nestie suggestion: Plastic bags for dirty clothes and diapers

1-2 changes of clothes

Shirt or jacket for baby and mommy

Blanket

Hat for sun or cold

Nestie suggestion: Breast pads or a cover-up for nursing

Bottles and formula (for a lighter load, measure powdered formula into clean bottles and mix with tap water at the destination, or pack bottled water)

Baby food and spoons

Burp cloths and bibs

Teething gel or rings

Pacifiers (pack with nipples in a clean bag)

Toys for comfort and distraction

Hand sanitizer

Sunblock (if baby is over six months)

Antibiotic cream, fever and pain reducer, antihistamine

Emergency phone numbers and information

re: Q: Packing a Diaper Bag?

I recommend having two different diaper bags at least mostly packed...a small and a large- for different size and length trips, so you aren't always lugging around a huge bag for a short trip to the store!

I always have at least one Kleenex travel pack in the bag or my purse for wiping noses or cleaning up anything!

Like gr8fulaa, I like to have another bag with a small fold up yogi toes mat, sneakers or flip flops and a change of comfy yoga pants.  I really feel it's important for me to take time for myself, so when I'm out and have some extra time I love to stop at the park and do some sitting and reading in the fresh air or taking the stroller for a leisurely walk.  I never know when I'm going to have time so I like to be prepared.

I always travel with two more things: nursing pads and Mylicon drops!!  After having thrush, I change my nursing pads frequently and the Mylicon has saved the day more than once!

A luggage tag on the outside of my diaper bag with my diaper bag checklist!  Therefore, I won't forget anything!

I completely agree with the camera idea! Too many candid shots come up when you are out and about. Also, I have found that the disposable changing pads are alot easier, and I think cleaner and only take up about as much room as the pad that comes with your diaper bag.

re: Q: Packing a Diaper Bag?

DH and I try and be prepared for anything so along with everything on the list we include a bag of emergency items, including Mylicon, Band-Aids, Neosporin, tissue paper, antibacterial hand wash, hand wipes, Q-tips, Ziplock baggies, emergency contact list (with addresses too), Shout stain remover pads, and an American Red Cross Baby healthcare kit (nasal aspirator, medicine dropper, nail clipper, and a thermometer).  Lots of this stuff is available in ?travel size? so it doesn?t make either of our diaper bags heavy or overloaded -- and we feel secure knowing that we have lots of resources at our fingertips.

re: Q: Packing a Diaper Bag?

Use a travel container for powdered formula, you can measure what you need for one bottle in each compartment and each container can hold up to 4 bottles. I keep a travel kit with a medicine dropper, nail clippers, suction ball and tylanol. It's in a little black zip up case and fits easily into the side pocket of my bag. An extra pacifier just incase one gets lost. It also helps to have a little pocket for the pacifier, there are cute ones out now that hook on to your bag or stoller so it doesn't get lost at the bottom of your diaper bag.

I always carry a sling/baby carrier with me.  It has saved us more than once when my son gets tired, cranky or my arms get tired.

re: Q: Packing a Diaper Bag?

I always carry my "hooter hider"! As a nursing mother, I find that this really helps to keep things hidden. I also like to have Mylicon or Little Tummies for possible gas issues. Last but not least, I like to pack some scented diaper bags (plastic ones) for dirty diapers. I hate throwing stinky diapers in someone else's garbage.

Breast pads if you're nursing are important.
